Skype and Google Voice

Awe,

I am unable to use both skype and google voice in Ubuntu, from res.
What is weird is that both work in windows.

With google voice
I use gmail in firefox and when I try to call someone, I get a network error message after a minute or so of awkward “can you hear me” time.

With skype
I attempted to follow these instructions:
http://www.icts.uct.ac.za/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=2909
as closely as I could, but when I try to sign in, I one of two possible error messages:
1. HTTPS proxy auth failed
2. not connect to P2P network
Is it because I can’t find the following check box under advanced settings as suggested by the ICTS website?
Use port 80 and 443 as alternatives for incoming connections.

Any ideas what may be the problem? I’ve been struggling with this for ages!

Thank you, and be happy.
