The Linux Enthusiasts Group (LEG) is a Society at the University of Cape Town, affiliated with the Cape Linux Users Group. This site focuses exclusively on the use of Linux, and other free software at UCT. LEG isn't currently a user group in it's own right. If you want help with linux, you should join the CLUG Mailing lists.

Fedora Mirror

Fedora is a 1st class citizen on our mirror. We mirror i386 and x86_64, but not sources.

When on campus, Fedora should automatically use LEG, as we are registered with the Fedora Mirror system as the mirror for UCT.

Manual configuration: You should use the following values as the baseurl values for the specified repositories in your Yum configuration:

  • Fedora:$releasever/Everything/$basearch/os/
  • Fedora Updates:$releasever/$basearch/
  • Livna (optional):$releasever/$basearch/

For more information about configuring Yum, see Managing Software with yum.

Livna RPM package repository

We now have a mirror of Livna, a (semi)-official repository of patent-encumbered and non-free software for Fedora. We only mirror the packages for FC6; if you have an older version you really should upgrade. The mirror is at

Freedom Toaster is up

The Freedom Toaster is back up.

At the moment, only 2 writers work, and DVD-burning doesn’t work. We did get 3 new writers provided by the Shuttleworth Foundation, but the CS department has lost them :-(

So bring some blank CDs, and burn the distros of your choice.

Debian 'etch' 4.0 release

Yes, folks, it’s true! One of those most rare events in the FLOSS universe has occurred! That’s right, the Easter Bunny has left us… a new Debian release. It’s Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 rev 0, codename “etch”. This is the first release to include the AMD64 port as an official architecture:

Mostly for the benefit of OSS-using Windows users, we have a mirror for Videolan’s VLC.

Ubuntu Mirror

Ubuntu is a 1st class citizen on our mirror. It’s actively used by the LEG admins, and the mirror should always be in tip-top condition.

Debian Mirror

Debian GNU/Linux is a 1st class citizen on our mirror. It’s actively used by the LEG admins, and the mirror should always be in tip-top condition. We mirror i386, amd64, and sources.

We mirror the Debian website at:

Some Quake 3 based games

Following this discussion on CLUG-Chat, I’ve downloaded a copy of the games mentioned:

The Great Linux Distro Poll

Because of our disk space constraints, we sometimes have to make hard decisions and remove certain Linux distributions from the set that we mirror. To do this, we need to know which mirrors save UCT the most bandwidth, i.e. which distributions are the most popular at UCT. So we need your input: please visit the poll and vote for your primary distribution.

Some new site features

I’ve added some Drupal modules to make it easier to follow our site. You can now subscribe to e-mail alerts, for specific types of news item or specific forums.

By default, Drupal doesn’t seem to do a good job with RSS feeds for forums, or comments in general. The e-mail alerts will probably work better than the feeds.

We have a a site-wide comment feed at You can see it linked from the Site Map.
